Tips for Measuring for UPVC Windows

If you’ve ever had a visit from a double glazing salesman then you may have had them taking measurements of your windows from the inside of the house in the warm whilst the wind is howling outside. This is not good, as from the inside is the wrong way to measure for new windows. The salesman is more worried about staying warm than getting the correct sizes for new double glazed windows.

Now, you may think that letting people measure their own windows for when getting new double glazing windows instead of using a salesman is a mistake for a company to make. Surely letting the customers do it themselves is going to lead to mistakes in measurements and cost both the customer and client extra money. This isn’t true though as measuring for UPVC windows is a very easy task to do yourself.

When measuring to find the right size for your double glazed windows, take the measurements from the outside of the house, so venture out into your garden with your measuring tape to make sure you are getting the right measurements. The process should only take a couple of minutes so don’t worry about being outside for a long time if it’s cold.

The most important thing to remember is that you must not measure your current windows. You are not measuring the window that is already there, you need to be measuring the size of the gap in the brick work as this will give you the size of the space available to fit the new UPVC windows.

Since the frame will be fitted into this gap, the frame you order should be approximately 10mm smaller than the smallest brick opening size in the gap. Be sure to measure the gap in at least three different places so that you find the smallest measurement in the opening. When taking down your measurements, be aware of what metric system your UPVC windows company uses. They may want them in millimetres or inches so be aware of this so that you can take the sizes directly in the required measurements or be ready to convert them.
